Stop Negative Campaign Ads
From where I sit....
C'mon Albuquerque, we are better than this and it's time to put an end to negative political advertising in our city. What's wrong with the country is not right for Albuquerque: Dirty politics. Mudslinging. Half truths. Fear mongering. Selective use of evidence. Deceptive framing. hearsay. ENOUGH.
These attack ads began when a front runner emerged in the race for mayor. The attacks were and continue to be directed at a single candidate, who continues to lead in the polls. It really doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who is responsible, but what matters is seeing them for what they are and not being manipulated by them. Negative advertising is not welcome in our city.
(For the record, the target of this ad was instrumental in passing the nation's strongest sex offender law in 2013. Read more)
Negative advertising appeals to the worst in us - we are more influenced by bad than good. We are wired to have a bias towards negativity. It leads to lower voter turnout by generating disgust at the political process. In a city where only 20% of eligible voters cast ballots in the 2013 Mayoral race, we can't afford that. It also results in bad decisions, because unfortunately the mind remembers negative messages. Albuquerque is at a crossroads - we simply cannot afford bad decisions.
Vote for your candidate: Look for the right experience, wide ranging endorsements, and a proven track record. We need our next mayor to put our interests, not special interests, first. We need a mayor who stands for transparency and accountability. We need a mayor who has bipartisan legislative experience - someone who knows how things work and how to get things done. Big ideas, smart and innovative ideas - and well-honed skills to implement change.
So when you vote - remember that. And let your voice be heard -
Early voting is Mon-Friday, 9am - 5pm, through September 29. Election Day is OCTOBER 3rd. And If there is a runoff, it will be November 14th.
